Central Jersey Ski Club Announces Special Historical Walking Tour in Metuchen

Event Date: Saturday, May 16, 2026

Rain Date: Sunday, May 17, 2026

Start Time: 2:00 PM

Meeting Location: Metuchen Train Station — Northbound Side (toward New York) CJSC Metuchen, NJ — After nearly two decades, Club Member Richard Herring invites The Central Jersey Ski Club to a special Historical Trip to Metuchen, a guided afternoon walk through one of Middlesex County’s most storied small towns. The event will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, beginning promptly at 2:00 PM at the Metuchen Train Station (northbound side). A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, May 17.

This unique program blends local lore, hidden landmarks, and a few surprises that even longtime residents may not know. Participants will enjoy the following on Saturday, (If it rains, the 5/17 Rain Date will have fewer guest lecturers).

  • A quick tour of the Colonial Soldiers Cemetery

A rare glimpse into Metuchen’s Revolutionary-era past, led by and Honest-To-God local historian (NOT Richard H.). It

will include stories of early settlers and early patriots who lost their lives in revolutionary battles.

  • A stop at one of the last independent bookstores in Middlesex County

A celebration of small-town resilience and literary culture, highlighting a beloved shop. It contains all the printed diversity you would expect in a small store crowded with used books.

  • A remarkable story about Metuchen’s own “David Copperfield”

Learn the little-known tale of a hometown son who became a legend. A highlight is a trip to the site of his father's store on Main Street, and a recent tale of Copperfield downtown — presented by a ** Professional Magician Guest Lecturer**.

*** And maybe ... no promises, a local resident who has become a highly successful Hollywood screenwriter.

This event is a chance to explore Metuchen the way locals know it — full of character, history, and unexpected magic.

And of Course, after a grueling tour, many may choose to fortify themselves at a local bar or restaurant (Hailey's

Harp and Pub, Mexi Modo, The Greek on Main, many others).

The tour is open to club members and their guests. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
